Disney’s live-action movie Aladdin ascended at the North American box office over the sixth highest memorial holiday weekend scraping in nearly $117 million leading ahead of Lionsgate’s John Wick 3 by approximately $3 million.
Aladdin was released on the American four-day Memorial Day weekend and earned $116.8 million from Friday through Monday. According to the estimates, the film was reportedly expected to rake in $80 million. However, Disney’s Aladdin managed to collect a revenue of $91.5 million from Friday to Sunday, crossing the estimates.
The live-action movie is a remake of 1992 Disney’s animated movie directed by Guy Ritchie. The casting of the film stars Will Smith as the genie and the Egyptian-born Canadian actor Mena Massoud as the wily charmer who pretends to be a prince to catch the attention of the lovely Jasmine played by Naomi Scott.
Disney’s 1992 Aladdin, which featured the remarkable voice of Robin Williams as the fast-talking genie and starred actor Scott Weinger as Aladdin has been attempted to adapt in the new version which more or less obtained mixed critical response but howsoever managed to rock in the box office.
Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, was the last week’s box office leader that slipped to second, taking in $24.6 million for three days and $31 million for 4 days.
Keanu Reaves is yet again seen as the retired hitman John Wick. The movie shows his struggle while being chased by an army of killers after a contract is put on his head. The cast also includes are Halle Berry, Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, and Anjelica Huston.
According to the reports, the third position on the box office was bagged by Disney’s other blockbuster that has been maintaining a high position in the box office for one long month. Avengers: Endgame took in an estimated $17.2 million for three days ($22.1 million for four).
Avengers is a multi-starred movie starring Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Bradley Cooper, Scarlett Johansson, and Josh Brolin. Avengers: Endgame has broken domestic records but, with a worldwide rake of $2.68 billion, but it’s still short of the $2.79 billion earned by all-time leader James Cameron’s Avatar in 2009. However, by 3 weeks of release, the movie preceded James Cameron’s other movie stagnated at the position following Avatar– Titanic.
The production cost is over $180 million, Aladdin has earned about $207 million globally with an international gross of $121 million.
